On January 29, the Winter sports teams were introduced in the Kennard-Dale gym for the Winter Sports Pep Rally. The seniors from boy’s basketball, girl’s basketball, wrestling, and cheerleading were all introduced and from each of these teams two representatives participated in the “Slam Dunk Contest.” The two representatives for boy’s basketball were Paul Moore and Brenton Mitchell. The girl’s basketball representatives were Michelle Muller and Melissa Chenoweth. The wrestling team was represented by Nick Page and Bryar Robinson, and cheerleaders represented by April Peters and Lynnea Lee. The rules were simple, show up or get showed up!
Boy’s basketball started things off. Brenton started things off with an off-the-backboard dunk assisted by KG. Paul followed up with a failed attempt then a windmill jam. Then the girls trailed the boys with original “dunks” from Michelle and Melissa. The wrestlers then came in. Nick and Bryar’s dunks made the decision quite hard for the fans to judge. The cheerleaders ended the first round with two fairly simple “dunks.” After the first round the dunks are all about even and the decision of a winner is tough to make.
The second round is where things began to happen. Brenton went up for a second attempted dunk and succeeded which started things off good. Paul then came out with a marked dunk from the arc which brought the crowd to their feet. Melissa and Michelle completed two dunks to follow up the boy’s team. Nick’s dunk followed up Paul’s quite well with a leap over Brenton’s back to jam off the assisted bounce by Brenton. The dunk surprised the crowd and brought a roar to the stands. Then came Bryar’s alley-oop dunk assisted by KG which again amazed the stands. The stakes were high for the cheerleaders to follow up with but April and Lynnea had some impressive moves to finish up the contest.
The voting was done then by a “scream-vote.” The final three to yell to vote for were Paul, Nick, and Bryar. After the voting process the crowd came to a decision that Nick Page was the Slam Dunk Champ for the winter sports pep rally.
